The Mortar and Pestle

                 A Devotional on Ephesians 2:4-10

Back before blenders and processors, there was one simple tool that sat in the kitchens of our parents and grandparents; the mortar and pestle.

You would place whole spices inside that looked impressive, but they were hard and incomplete.  The sweet smell of the fragrance could not be released until they are crushed.  They cannot fulfill their purpose until pressure breaks them open.

Sometimes, God does the same with us.  The apostle Paul says in Ephesians 2 that before Christ found us, we were “dead in trespasses and sins.”  We looked whole, strong, capable, and complete on the outside, but spiritually, we were lifeless.  Our potential was locked inside.  Our purpose was sealed beneath the hardness of pride, fear, and self-reliance.

“But God, being rich in mercy… made us alive together with Christ.”

Just two words; But God.  This is the moment when the pestle comes down and puts pressure on the spice (you and I).  This is grace confronting what we were, sinners.  Grace breaks open what we could not fix.  Grace applies pressure not to destroy us, but to awaken us.  And when God puts you in the mortar, He is not punishing you, He is preparing you.

The simple fact is He is releasing compassion that you didn’t know you had.  He is releasing humility that pride once buried.  He is releasing strength that forged through struggle and releasing the purpose that you were created for.

What is the pressure that you are feeling today?  Where is life grinding, pressing upon, or breaking you open?  Instead of assuming God has abandoned you, consider this:  You may be in His mortar.  And what He is about to release in you will be a blessing to others.

  1. This is so true, we don’t realize what we can accomplish until we are put through a test. When we’re going through tough times, initially we may not know which way to go. Then we call on God. He will lay on our heart a way out. Then all we have to do is follow the way He is showing us.

To me, this let me know that I have some unused potential, that I didn’t think I had.
