Thirsting for God

What do you do when you are thirsty? You drink!  Thirst is a signal that tells you that something deeper is going on within you.

  • If you have a thirst for success, you chase it.
  • If you thirst for change or love, you look for it.

Thirst always points to a deeper hunger so you must identify the source of what it really is.

But what if you have something that you are longing for that nothing that feels out of reach, or what if that thing that you are yearning is not good for you what do you do?

Psalm 42:1 is a reflection of spiritual thirst, the deep yearning of the soul for God Himself.  The verse reads: “As the deer pants for the streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God.”

A. W. Tozer says, “God is never found accidentally,” and we pursue God because He first put an urge within us that spurs us to the pursuit.

Just as a deer needs water to live, the human soul must have God to be whole.  This is not a casual desire, but a method of survival which shows us that God is not optional nourishment, but the essential hydration that we all need.

Jesus tells us to bring all that we carry to Him, all the baggage, the worrying, burdens, and yes even our spiritual thirst and He promises to give us relief from it (Matt. 11:28-29).  It’s a simple pattern with a deep meaning, come to Me and drink.

You do not have to suppress your thirst, just surrender it!

One Response

  1. One must remember that whatever we thirst for is not a one-time event. It’s not ongoing cycle. We must continue to satisfy that need. Serving God is an ongoing process, we must continue to seek more from Him in order to get closer and to be more like Him.
