The Stony Heart

In Ezekiel 36:26 God says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”  This is a picture of the Lord’s care and His renewal of His people.  It is a spiritual transformation even though the people have been charged with shameful and horrible sins, He would still be willing to give them a new heart and a new spirit.

It is critical that we understand that wickedness extends to humanity’s relationship with God.  Because it is the human heart that as a result of the Fall, actively hates God.  And it has been since the fall that man has been trying to take the place of God by trying to elevate himself instead of humbling himself.

When Cain murdered his brother Abel, the human heart has been at war against the goodness of God, as He warned Cain that “sin was at his door.”  The Bible also tells us that every intent of the thoughts of our heart is evil,” so how do we break this chain of events?

In Ezekiel, God makes the promise that:

He will give you a new heart, a new spirit, one that is made of flesh so that it can move when He moves, and that can be shaped and corrected, admitting when it is wrong.  This is the spiritual transformation that is spoken on, because it means something for someone who is in need of a heart transplant spiritually.

Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3 NKJV), which means that there must be a complete and full change that is born from above.  Unless we allow God to remove the stony heart that lies within us, we will never see change.

The change from stone to flesh is only made possible by the new covenant that Jeremiah presents (Jer. 31:31-34), this is what will lead those to turn to the One who gave with all His heart in exchange for our rebellious heart so that it can become sensitive to the will of God.

Are you ready for a spiritual transformation?
